The game was first announced by Spike Chunsoft at Tokyo Game Show 2015. A collaboration with the Puyo Puyo, a puzzle matching game developed by Compile Heart, was announced at Tokyo Game Show 2016. It was released on January 20, 2017 in Japan and February 22, 2017 in North America for the Sony PlayStation Vita.
The Nintendo Switch version of "Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair" is available to download from the Nintendo eShop. It is being published by Spike Chunsoft and will be released on November 17th 2018.
"Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair" received positive reviews. While the Vita version of "Danganronpa 2" holds an average score of 79/100 on Metacritic, the Switch version of the game has a lower average score of 67/100.
Destructoid’s Chris Carter stated "I walked away from this one feeling like I had just witnessed a psychopathic murder mystery that was just as much fun to solve as it was to go on. The clever character designs and interesting story kept me guessing the entire way through, and the sheer volume of content and bonus material is sure to keep "Danganronpa 2" on anyone’s Vita for a long time."
Game Revolution’s Nick Tan gave the game a 4.5 out of 5 stars. He praised the characters, saying "I can’t say enough about these colorful personalities; each one distinct and fun to learn more about, even when they’re jerks (and they’re almost all jerks). They’re also wickedly intelligent but in different ways; there are big brains and little brains, smarty-pantses and dunces." He praised the storyline, gameplay, graphics and physics engine.
GameSpot’s Zorine Te praised the gameplay, graphics, characters and story. She criticized the game for not adding anything new to the series’ formula.
The Vita version of "Danganronpa 2" has received several best-of 2017 awards from multiple gaming websites. It was ranked seventh in Dengeki PlayStation’s "Best Games of 2017", followed by the same rank in Famitsu’s "Top Games of 2017".
